October 2008 Month End ChiroNews Round Up

Friday, October 31st, 2008
By Daria Belov

It's Halloween 2008, time for scary movies, unhealthy candy, and even some last-minute Halloween costume ideas, for those of you that have waited up until this point to decide on your costume. After all the Halloween parades, parties and other festivities settle down, don't forget there's still a President to elect this coming Tuesday. Not only that, depending on where you live, it's time to turn the clock back on November 2 (Sunday), for daylight savings time. We're wrapping up the month here at planetchiropractic.com with a review of ChiroNews posted during the last 30 days. Wishing a thankful November to you all!

The month of October 2008 began with news that Palmer chiropractic College had received an HSRA Grant Award to establish a practice based research network. The U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration awarded a grant for over $310,000 to the Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research.

On October 3rd Dr. Michael Dorausch took a look at Internet search traffic related to the vice presidential debate, which took place on October 2nd. Times have certainly changed since our television dominant society with three of the top searches being related to watching the VP debates online.

On Saturday, October 4th, there was news from the St. Regis Hotel in Dana Point California. Organizations including the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association and businesses including planetchiropractic.com sponsored and attended an autism awareness fundraiser. The poker tournament and casino night was MC'd by 7 time Tour de France winning cyclist Lance Armstrong and author Jenny McCarthy.

In early October there was a blog post visiting the defunct Colorado College of Chiropractic and a more in-depth view of political terms appearing in web site search results.

Chiropractors were reminded of the importance in joining alumni associations and holistic health care organizations. That news was followed by political summaries that showed chiropractors gave more money to Democrats in 2008 which was followed by a chart breakdown of individuals in Congress that received chiropractic donations during the same period.

October marked some of our best advances made in relationship to posting and responding to chiropractic classified advertisement. A Surefire Way to Separate You from Your Money showed yet another 419 scam e-mail involving international IP addresses. Classifieds ads in October became equipped with reCAPTCHA technology, which is helping to digitize printed works.

Big news for those with muscles, Miss Muscle Beach 1948 received a 60 year anniversary award during a bodybuilding ceremony in Venice Beach, California. The 1948 award-winning fitness enthusiast publicly thanked her chiropractor and talked about the importance of regular chiropractic care for maintaining one's longevity and good health.

New chiropractors received a recipe for failure, with a warning to watch out for the latest gadget sales pitches targeted at the chiropractic industry. Ironically, the news was followed days later with reports of spinal decompression tables entering the market as bank repossessions. That was followed by news that more than 30 chiropractor businesses were posted for sale within a single day, showing evidence that it's a buyers market when it comes to chiropractic practices and equipment manufacturing.

There were two letters from presidential candidate Barack Obama, one related to a universal health care plan, and the other Obama's thoughts on Chiropractic and Medicare.

The chiropractic blogs section featured a post in early October with updates related to playing and downloading chiropractic audio MP3 files. A new MP3 plug-in was installed during the weekend of October 11th and new chiropractic audio was added to the web site.

The month was rounded up with a blog post poking fun at dangerous choices for chiropractor Halloween costumes and a news summary of Halloween office ideas and happenings from 2008 and years prior.

Wishing you all a safe and enjoyable weekend, Thanksgiving is right around the corner!

When I started chiropractic college, and as an Intern Doctor for the past 5 months at the Goble Heal Chiropractic in Winamac, Indiana, I have been committed to learn more about how chiropractic can help children. This commitment led me all the way from California to Indiana to work under Dr. Cherie Goble, an international lecturer on pediatrics, member of the Gonstead Seminar staff and co-editor of the Chiropractic Pediatric Textbook.
My experience here has also helped me to transition from student to doctor, seeing how a successful practice operates from all angles. As an associate doctor, I am looking forward in:
? Sharing my passion for chiropractic and children
? Applying my drive in becoming an ethical and compassionate doctor
? Bringing my ability to deliver positivity, excitement and joy to your practice
? Providing high-quality chiropractic education to the community with health talks and informational materials
? Joining network groups to share chiropractic
All Resulting In Increased Productivity And Profits For You
I am confident that my enthusiasm and drive can create a win-win situation for your practice and for my maturing career. If you are currently not in need of an Associate Doctor, I am also open to consider other possible positions in your office. 5 dangerous choices of chiropractor Halloween costumes

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

By Michael Dorausch, DC

Depending on the chiropractor, chances are they’ll show up in the office this Halloween Friday in some sort of Halloween costume. I know that my staff will be dressing up, and I’ll probably be taking advantage of the Friday opportunity to dress casual, showing up as a surfer, or something else easy and comfortable to wear in the office.

I’ve joked before about Halloween costumes that wouldn’t be a good idea for chiropractors to wear, and I thought I’d expand on that list with some photos. Leave now if you lack a sense of humor.

Here’s my list of five Halloween costumes that probably wouldn’t be well-suited for chiropractic practitioners…

1) Edward Scissorhands

Unless the only thing your chiropractor is doing on Halloween is shredding old patient files, the Edward Scissorhands costume is probably not the best choice.

2) Freddy Krueger (photo courtesy costumzee)

Aside from scaring the heck out of the majority of people visiting someone’s chiropractic office, my instinct says having six-inch long razor blade fingernails while palpating someone’s back, is not too smart.

3) Michael Myers - Halloween (photo courtesy buycostumes.com)

Hey, the jumpsuit is a nice idea for casual Friday, but the ginormous kitchen knife is probably a comfort killer for anyone coming in to receive a relaxing spinal adjustment. Kind of difficult to comfortably lay face down when you know someone’s got a big blade in their left hand. Gives new meaning to the often heard complaint “doc I’ve got this knifelike pain in my shoulder blade.”

4) Captain Hook (image courtesy buycostumes.com)

This one isn’t so scary as the others and the one bonus is that stainless steel hook could be used to remove that massive blade stabbed into the spine by Mr. Myers. Other than that, not too functional to go about correcting spinal subluxations with a hook for a hand.

5) Wolverine (from X-Men)

This costume wouldn’t be too hard to pull off. Find yourself a jean jacket, flannel shirt, old motorcycle jacket pair of jeans, big belt buckle, oh and six razor-sharp retracting claws, and you could pretty much have this costume mastered. For pretty much the same reasons as those mentioned above; razor-sharp hands, claws, butcher knives, and scissors, are probably not the best among choices for chiropractor Halloween costumes. Something soft and cuddly like the Easter Bunny would be a better choice.

Thanks to Susan Esparza, Jennifer Kushell, and Carrie Hill for costume idea input.
