More CCA Convention Chiropractic Photos from San Diego

Friday, June 7th, 2013

By Michael Dorausch, D.C.

OK California Chiropractors, I promised more photos from the 2013 CCA convention in San Diego and here they are. I posted a brief recap of the conference the day I returned home, posted news about joining the CCA evolution of chiropractic in California on Tuesday, and posted more photos from the event on Wednesday. It’s been a busy week.

California Chiropractor Brian StenzlerCalifornia Chiropractor Brian Stenzler in San Diego

Dr. Brian Stenzler has been extremely active in the state of California, both as a chiropractor, and in a leadership role at the CCA. He is a past president of the CCA San Diego and currently sits on the executive board for the California Chiropractic Association. Dr. Brian is a 1998 graduate of Life University in Marietta Georgia. He currently practices in Del Mar and Pacific Beach California.

Chiropractor Patrick GentempoChiropractor Patrick Gentempo

Dr. Patrick Gentempo was one of the chiropractors I had been listening to during my daily commute to chiropractic school in the 1990s. Sitting in traffic an hour each way provided an opportunity to listen to Dr. Patrick and Dr. Christopher Kent talk to me about chiropractic (via way of audio cassettes). Just yesterday I posted a photograph of Dr. Kent and how he would have likely looked at Palmer in 1973. I am incredibly grateful for the chiropractors I’ve had in my life since the very beginning of my journey.

California Chiropractor Grace SynCalifornia Chiropractor Grace Syn with goodies for vendors

The annual CCA convention features free continuing education for chiropractors that are members of the organization. As everyone knows, continuing education isn’t actually free, it is subsidized by the vendors who sponsor the conference. In the above photo Dr. Grace Syn is carting out a whole bunch of goodies to be shared with conference vendors. I myself purchased two cases of protein bars while at the event, that were sent second day air to my office, great to have in our refrigerator so I can not be hungry and focus on adjusting patients.

North Hollywood Chiropractor Michael BlumNorth Hollywood Chiropractor Michael Blum

I was really glad to see North Hollywood chiropractor Dr. Michael Blum was in attendance. I had heard that a former employee of another chiropractor had recently started going to Dr. Blum’s office and she was raving about the care and attention she was receiving. Nice to share that with your colleagues when you see them. I feel confident Dr. Blum will provide great chiropractic care if there is anyone you want to send his way.

California Chiropractor Leslie HewittCalifornia Chiropractor Leslie Hewitt speaking at CCA

Danville chiropractor Leslie Hewitt has also been very active with the California Chiropractic Association. She’s the current leadership behind the CCA Conventions & Seminars Department, and she’s already at work planning the extravaganza for 2014 in San Diego. I’ve been really impressed with the continual improvement of CCA events during the past few years. Thanks to the chiropractors that have committed much time and energy to the mission, chiropractic in California is on the move.

Michael McLean of International Chiropractors AssociationMichael McLean – President of the International Chiropractors Association

For those of us that have been involved in the International Chiropractors Association in the state of California (I was a SICA president during my days at Cleveland Chiropractic College in Los Angeles), it’s terrific to see ICA leadership attending a CCA event. That is huge for the state of California and says a lot about the direction we are moving in. Congratulations to Dr. Michael Mclean on his recent nomination to the position of president of the ICA.

Time to get back to the office and rock this Friday afternoon. Wherever you are, hope you’re having a fantastic day. I plan to see you at a chiropractic conference sometime soon.

2013 CCA Convention and Expo Recap

Monday, June 3rd, 2013

By Michael Dorausch, D.C.

The California Chiropractic Association hosted another spectacular event in San Diego this past weekend. The 2013 CCA Convention & Expo took place at the Paradise Point Resort & Spa in Mission Bay (near Sea World). While the temperatures outside were cool, the energy inside the conference rooms was hot (you know I love that chiropractic energy). CCA did a terrific job in ensuring that this event was a successful one, I was excited to hear that we’ll be returning to San Diego in 2014. California chiropractors are fired up!

Chiropractors at CCA 2013 Convention & Expo

Saturday morning began with 7 quick motivational talks by seven different enthusiastic chiropractors. In the above photo (from left to right) are Drs. Patrick Gentempo, Matt Hubbard, Leslie Hewitt, Brian Stenzler, Grace Syn, Ted Carrick and Jason Deitch. The convention began on Thursday and went through till Sunday, with a packed room of chiropractors attending x-ray classes on Sunday morning.

Over the days I spoke with chiropractors from Ventura County, San Diego County, the San Fernando Valley, San Bernardino County, the Sacramento Valley, Riverside County, Kern County, and the High Desert, and everyone was in agreement. There’s something special going on in the world of chiropractic in the state of California. Not only was there free continuing education provided for CCA members (thanks to conference sponsors), there was plenty of discussion (both from the platform and among attendees) of vertebral subluxation, and I liked what I heard.

Well Beyond Medicine by Dr. Darrell Crain

I was excited to see former classmates like Dr. Darrell Crain (longtime author on Planet Chiropractic), who has recently published a book titled Well Beyond Medicine. It’s available on Amazon in both print and Kindle versions. I’d recommend you order a copy (I do not receive payment for any sales of this book).

I’ve said it so many times before, fellowship with your colleagues is critically important, I find it stimulates and motivates us to continue on with purpose. We get more done working together as a team, then we do as individuals. Speaking of teams, I remember when Dr. Kevin Joe (who I only got to see briefly this year) told me there was a team of chiropractors that had chartered a bus for the 2010 CCA Convention in Reno, Nevada. I heard that was fun. While the 2010 and 2011 conventions in Reno were a good time too, I prefer seeing Dr. Joe and everyone else in San Diego.

Last year’s 2012 CCA Convention was a joint effort with Parker Seminars and it was held at the same location in San Diego. I still have a CCA Parker Seminars Flickr photo set available for viewing online. I really, really, really liked the speakers at this year’s 2013 event. I look forward to hearing who’s going to be speaking in 2014. That’s where I’ll be getting my CE hours (chiropractors make sure you receive credit for classes you attend).

Effective June 1, 2013 and after, chiropractors in the state of California are now required to receive 24 hours of continuing education, which made the timing of this conference perfect for many chiropractors renewing their licenses later this year.

Thank you to the sponsors, thank you to the CCA, and thank you to the chiropractors who attended. It was great seeing such an enthusiastic group of people on the West Coast. Bring a friend and see you all next year!

Sherman Lyceum Ladies’ Lunch on the Lawn

Wednesday, May 29th, 2013

The League of Chiropractic Women (LCW) hosted a Ladies Lunch on the Lawn event on Saturday, May 25, on the campus of Sherman Chiropractic College. Here are a few photos from that event.

League of Chiropractic Women (LCW)The League of Chiropractic Women (LCW) at Ladies’ Lunch on the Lawn

Being that there were so many individuals in this photo I shot in RAW format. I’ve posted the original (extremely large) photo to my Sherman Lyceum Flickr set. It’s available in multiple sizes. Please do not post anywhere online without providing photo credit to Planet Chiropractic.

League of Chiropractic Women BannerThe League of Chiropractic Women (LCW) invited the ladies (D.C.s, DCs2B, spouses, CAs, women administrators, teachers, etc.), to a Southern style Ladies’ Lunch on the Lawn Saturday from 12:30-2 p.m. The intention was to illuminate and honor the women who paved the way for us and celebrate the women who will lead us into the future. They held a picnic under the oak tree near the Olsen building. It was fantasTIC! I loved seeing the ladies in their parasols and wide-brimmed hats. Well done ladies!

While I took photographs of cookies and cupcakes as well, I didn’t get a chance to try any, perhaps at the next lunch event. For those interested, there is a League of Chiropractic Women page on Facebook and I have posted photos for Drs. Nalyn Marcus, Kim Stetzel, and Patti Giuliano to the Sherman Lyceum Flickr photo set. Contact me if you want copies of the high-resolution originals, they’ll make terrific prints.

On the topic of Sherman Lyceum, here are photos from Dr. Ed Cordero’s Presidential Investiture (which took place on Thursday, May 23) and some other photos from 2013 Sherman Chiropractic Lyceum. I hope to have more posted before the weekend.

Sherman Chiropractic 2013 Lyceum Photos

Tuesday, May 28th, 2013

by Michael Dorausch, DC

Even though yesterday was Memorial Day in the United States, a day out of the office provided me an opportunity to post photographs from the Sherman Chiropractic College Presidential Investiture of Dr. Edwin Cordero, the fifth president of Sherman Chiropractic College. I was in my chiropractic office early this morning, fired up to share the energy that rubbed off on me during Lyceum, and I wanted to thank everyone who took part in putting on such a terrific event. I had promised more photos, and here they come.

Sherman Chiropractic Lyceum 2013Chiropractors on the Lawn at Sherman Chiropractic Lyceum 2013

To the far left is Dr. Tony DeMarco and Susan DeMarco. Maybrook Chiropractor, Dr. Judd Nogrady, is in the middle. It helps me when name tags are facing forward so thanks for helping me out docs. On the far right is Dr. Liam Schubel and another future chiropractor. Liam has the energy of a chiropractic student, and I really admire that about him.

Dr. Ed Cordero on the Lawn at Sherman CollegeSpeaking of people I admire, here’s a photo of the president of Sherman Chiropractic College, Dr. Ed Cordero. This photograph was taken on the first day after the investiture and while Dr. Cordero has been on campus since January, it feels as if he’s been a chiropractic college president for ages. Everything he’s ever done has led up to this time, working together with others, and moving forward into the future with chiropractic.

If you have not done so already, this is a chiropractic leader that you will want to meet, he has a passion for life and a commitment to serving. Dr. Cordero has authored numerous articles for Planet Chiropractic during the past decade plus, many of those articles were authored in Spanish, and we still have those articles available to this day. For those using a Google Chrome browser, you may be able to translate those articles from Spanish to English directly on the page. Here’s one titled… is chiropractic an art, a science, or a philosophy? (Es La Quiropractica Un Arte, Una Ciencia O Una Filosofía?)

Use this Cordero search link to discover a list of articles that mention or are authored by Dr. Cordero, and use the translate features if you want to translate articles from Spanish to English.

Dr. Cordero was also heavily instrumental in chiropractic missions to Panama and Costa Rica since the 1990s, here’s a historical panama missions search link, for those seeking to read more about the history related to those events.

Future Sherman Chiropractic Graduates

I’ve mentioned already that the energy on campus at Sherman Chiropractic College was electrifying, here’s a photo featuring a group of future chiropractors. I love how the little one up front is giving us the number one signal. During my visit to Sherman, I met people from South Carolina, North Carolina, and many parts of the globe. Everyone I came in contact with was enthusiastic, and that enthusiasm was flowing from above down and from the inside out.

Chiropractor Jeffrey FrancoChiropractor Jeffrey Franco Receives Award from Dr. Edwin Cordero

On the left in the above photo is chiropractor Jeffrey Franco, receiving a ROAR Career Advisor of the year award from Dr. Edwin Cordero. Several awards were handed out during Lyceum, and while I didn’t have a chance to photograph everyone, my congratulations to all for your efforts and accomplishments. The award reads “in Grateful Appreciation of Service and Commitment to Sherman College of Chiropractic.”

Kelvin Chiropractic SingaporeYou may think that the top referrer for chiropractic students came from a chiropractor practicing locally in South Carolina, or maybe a chiropractor in nearby Georgia, Florida, or North Carolina. It serves to put the rest of us in our place when Dr. Kelvin (photograph on the left) is receiving an award for referring chiropractic students to Sherman College, and he practices in Singapore.

I live and practice in Los Angeles, but walking on the grass was something I didn’t get to do while at chiropractic college. The years a chiropractic student is focused on their chiropractic education should be nurturing, and as unencumbered as possible. The stress of student loans and passing national boards is something nearly all will face, but the learning environment should be supportive. Something I really enjoyed while walking the campus at Sherman was the discovery of numerous places to study. Not studying with a laptop hunched over a desk, but old school studying with a book under a tree, allowing the mind to blossom and grow, like the nature surrounding it.

Dr. Kelvin is also a Patron and Regent of Sherman Chiropractic College. In this particular photo you can see all the added accolades underneath his name tag, but some chiropractors (and other attendees) had a long list of them. I saw D.C., Patron, Regent, ROAR, Bricklayer, and Presidents Circle. It’s a great feeling being surrounded by people of such enthusiasm and dedication, did I already mention how energetic the weekend was?

Drs. Tom Gelardi and Ed CorderoDrs. Tom Gelardi and Ed Cordero at Sherman Chiropractic College

“Everything stays in existence through tension” were the words of Tom Gelardi that had me sitting up at attention. He had spoken in the Big Tent, previous to taking this photo, and I loved what I heard. Dr. Thomas Gelardi is a visionary with an uncompromising commitment to his principles. It was he who, in 1973, fulfilled a long-standing dream of establishing a chiropractic college centered on the location and correction of vertebral subluxation. Dr. Gelardi remained president of the college until his retirement in 1996.

It’s a good thing I have long lunch breaks, time to return to the office and serve our chiropractic patients, more photos coming later this week.

Sherman Chiropractic College Presidential Investiture Photos

Tuesday, May 28th, 2013

The presidential investiture of Dr. Edwin Cordero took place on the campus of Sherman Chiropractic College on Thursday, May 23, 2013. After traveling nearly the entire day, and being picked up at the airport by a very helpful chiropractic student, I arrived at the investiture as members of the Board of Directors at Sherman College were sharing words about the college’s fifth president, Dr. Ed Cordero.

Dr. Ed Cordero Approaches the PlatformDr. Ed Cordero approaches the platform

With everyone under the big tent, Dr. Cordero shared his mission of bringing chiropractic to the world, one graduating chiropractor at a time. It was a very special day, an event I’ll remember for the rest of my lifetime.

Dr. Cordero’s son, John Cordero, performed an acoustic number during the investiture, which brought my memories back to visiting their home in Florida many years ago and seeing John practice guitar as a youth.

If you’ve ever had the opportunity to meet Dr. Ed Cordero in person, you know that he loves to smile and has a terrific sense of humor. If it wasn’t for the heat and humidity, we could have stayed in that tent all night, listening to stories of chiropractic yesterdays, chiropractic today, and chiropractic tomorrows.

The focus in the above image was on the original logo for the 1973 Sherman College, along with a very humbled new chiropractic president and others standing in the background. It felt good to be on the campus at Sherman College, it felt good to walk in the grass, it felt good to experience the energy, and it felt good to break bread with others. I saw many of my chiropractic friends in attendance and several of my chiropractic mentors.

Somewhere I have audio recordings of Dr. Ed Cordero and Dr. Dean Sottile speaking at Focus Chiropractic Philosophy events Sharon and I put on in Orange County California around 2000 or 2001. If I discover those and post them online I’ll include links here. I did find this 1998 video of Dean Sottile speaking during a chiropractic mission in Panama.

A student picked me up from the airport and made sure I arrived at the investiture, which reminded me of when I was a student and picked up then president of the International Chiropractors Association, Dr. Bob Braile. It’s inspiring to me to see that Dr. Braile is as committed to chiropractic today as he was when I first met him nearly 20 years ago.

Dr. Fred Schofield and Susan SchofieldDr. Fred Schofield and Susan Schofield at Sherman Chiropractic Lyceum

It’s always good to see my mate Dr. Fred Schofield and his wife Susan. It was especially good to see them at the investiture for Dr. Cordero. Dr. Fred taught a chiropractic continuing education class on Saturday for Lyceum, and Susan spoke as well. Both presentations were an added bonus for my traveling to South Carolina. They had me fired up and excited to be a chiropractor.

Dr. Ed and Debbie Cordero on May 23Dr. Ed and Debbie Cordero on May 23, 2013

One of the last photos I took the evening of the presidential investiture was the above photo of Dr. Ed and Debbie Cordero. The moon was near full and the sky had cleared from the rain that had fallen earlier in the day. It was time to go and celebrate, and celebrate we did.

I have many photos from the weekend at Sherman Chiropractic Lyceum 2013 but I’m in the office serving patients nearly every day this week. I’ll be posting photos from around the campus, photos taken during Lyceum, and photos from the 1970s themed celebration that took place Saturday night. I’ll update information when those photos make it online.

Contact Reflex Analysis Chiropractic Seminars with Dick Versendaal

Sunday, January 6th, 2013

I get postcards for seminars mailed to my chiropractic office in Los Angeles on a regular basis. Nearly all the seminars are for continuing education events in the state of California but sometimes they are for other areas as well. I recently received a postcard for a Dick Versendaal Seminar which takes place near LAX in February 2013 and I later noticed that there are several 2013 dates for his series of seminars posted to the planet chiropractic seminars pages.

From what I see posted, locations for 2013 include West Palm Beach, Los Angeles, St. Louis, West Virginia, New Jersey, Michigan, New Mexico, New York and Chicago. Here’s a copy of the postcard I received followed by some information regarding this form of analysis developed by Dr. Versendaal.

Dick Versendaal Contact AnalysisContact Reflex Analysis® (CRA®), simply stated, is an energy connection. It is a technique that utilizes a muscle response as an indicator and assessment of the energy status of each organ, gland, system, or structure. This energy assessment is accomplished by testing one or more reflexes, which are similar to acupuncture points and meridians, and monitoring the reactance of the muscle when in contact with these points. The more the body reacts when an energy imbalance is located, the weaker the muscle. In CRA the practitioner typically applies a single, downward push on the wrist of a patient’s outstretched arm while also making contact with a specific reflex point on the patient’s body. The gentle, but firm push is like a subtle “question” and the muscle reactivity response is the “answer.”

Dr. Dick Versendaal, DC, CRA, DCRC, DACBN is a master chiropractor who studied under and was mentored by BJ Palmer. He is an absolute genius of the synergy between the spine, organs, systems, and nutritional chemistry. Over the past 50 years he has researched, developed, and refined the subtle-energy technique called Contact Reflex Analysis™ through which one can determine the root cause of a health issue; emotional, nutritional, structural, or a combination of the three. Once the cause has been established, CRA can assist in determining most efficient and effective means of resolving the problem so wellness can be achieved. Dr. Dick Versendaal continues to care for and selflessly serve thousands of people worldwide. He has devoted his entire life to restoring hope to those who have none, and educating health professionals to do the same through Contact Reflex Analysis. His seminars are dynamic, engaging, and inspiring. They are offered around the country and open to all health professionals.

Knowing when and when not to adjust is the single most critical decision the Upper Cervical Chiropractor makes on a day to day basis. The better the doctor can answer this question, the more serious case he or she can handle and the better the result will be on a consistent basis. HOLDING is HEALING and through Mastery of Pattern Analysis you can know the progress of every patient. This Hands-on Workshop is designed to walk you through each fundamental component of Pattern Analysis. We are here to help you on the path of Mastery in the Specific. Come learn in a relatively few hours what others have learned over years. Experience is the BEST INVESTMENT YOU CAN MAKE! Look forward to seeing you with us! Come Join the Upper Cervical Revolution!

Core Pasadena Chiropractic 2012 Schedule February March April

C.O.R.E. refers to the idea that if we can put our differences aside, and unite on our strengths, then we are one step away from impacting and area and two steps away from impacting our profession and a sick care system that is failing. While we agree with the first couple of lines, we’re not sure about impacting all chiropractors so we will start with a C.O.R.E.!

But we believe it won’t take much to tip the profession, and we in the San Gabriel Valley feel as if it isn’t too far from happening with C.O.R.E.’s popping up nationwide. We are committed to making a difference. We’ve been trying to prove that it’s not the quantity of chiropractors coming together but the quality of chiropractors coming together that will make the biggest difference.

The C.O.R.E. group drives home the idea that we are all connected to accomplish something great in a profession we love. It has been our hope since C.O.R.E. was launched in August 2003, that C.O.R.E. will be more than just a generic organization, rather a force for good, by bringing social conscious to social/professional networking while building a foundation toward becoming the premiere organization in chiropractic while working with established organizations within our profession. We look forward to your involvement.

RSVP by contacting Dr. Dennis Buckley at 626-991-8877.

Location: Health Advantage Health & Wellness Center
1450 N. Lake Ave., Pasadena, CA 91104 626-798-7805

Brian Kelly Presidential Inauguration Event Photos

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

By Michael Dorausch, DC

OK gang, I’m back from Oakland, California (AirBart FTW!) and I still have loads of photos to sort through from the Life West weekend event. Not surprisingly, things cranked in my LA chiropractic office today, as a humorous reminder of how our head space effects volume and flow. I’ll get some Luau photos posted before the weekend, but here’s some more from the Friday night inaugural event.

Brian Kelly Cutting CakeLife West President Brian Kelly Cutting Cake With His Daughters Help

Newly inaugurated President of Life Chiropractic College West, Dr. Brian Kelly, cut the cake with help from one of his kids. I mentioned in an earlier post that the event was fantastic (the entire weekend was) and Dr. Kelly not only cut us cake (it was yummy), he blew us all away with his trombone performance.

I wasn’t expecting an incoming chiropractic president that had such musical talent, and I think it gave those in attendance an opportunity to see another side of the new captain at LCCW. I’m looking forward to see what else we’re going to see from the bay area chiropractic school.

All Smiling ChiropractorsAttendees are all smiles

The crowd was all smiles as chiropractors celebrated, ate cake, and listened to jazz. Earlier in the day, chiropractors received continuing education hours, and got to listen to some terrific presentations from top educators in the field. Friday night was the inauguration and celebration, with more events (and a Luau) on Saturday.

Nearly every chiropractor that has done national board review for x-ray related studies in the past 20 years, recognizes the face of 1983 magna cum laude PA Chiropractic College graduate, Dr John Donofrio DC, DACNB. Looking snappy in his classy bow tie, Donofrio was joined by the beautiful Kim Gorman and San Francisco Chiropractor, Dr. Keith Fretty.

I was so impressed with the number of chiropractors that turned out for the event, and I had a great time catching up with chiropractors on their whereabouts and activities. Colleagues had new offices open, had moved to new cities, had kids going to chiropractic school, and I had to get all the latest. If you don’t know, I love what I do. Great to see so many friends enjoying their lives so fully.

Attendees and presenters included Life Chiropractic College President Dr. Guy Riekeman, everyone’s favorite SoCal Chiropractic Rock Goddess Mary Jane, Dr. Billy DeMoss, and Dr. Scott Sawyer (in above photo from left to right). While I have great times traveling to New Jersey for New Beginnings and Atlanta for LifeForce, I’m rather excited about having more principled chiropractic events to attend in California.

Here’s one more view of Dr. Kelly playing trombone with the band. Photos from the weekend will continue to be posted throughout this week and we’ll have some news on awards and accolades as well. Thanks to everyone who helped make this weekend a success.
