There's been a firestorm of discussion going on today related to a new video campaign by the makers of Motrin. Going to be one hell of a week for those in the reputation management department at Johnson & Johnson, the makers of Motrin. I'm not getting into the Motrin Mom campaign discussion here, visit the blog for my thoughts on the campaign and major headache side effects.
The wearing your baby campaign doesn't seem to be going too well for the drugs manufacturer. The conversation taking place online has been at a blistering pace, with everyone seeming to have an opinion regarding the video in question.

Regardless of the topic dies down during the next 24 or 48 hours, potential brand damage has already been done. There's a growing amount of blog posts appearing related to the situation, and rather than me rehashing what's being said across the blogosphere, I'm linking out to a number of resources I've come across during the past hour or so.
The blog Drums and Whistles has a Motrin v. Moms post which offers a memo to Motrin. It reads... Before you launch an ad on your site that?s targeting mothers of babies, you might want to run it by some focus groups that have?um?moms with babies.
Shake the Salt has a brief post titled Motrin: The Anti-Mom? It includes a link to another site with a transcript of the advertisement.
The insanely amazing Peter Shankman offers a detailed post on the REAL problem with the Motrin ads. Peter offers us a different perspective, and points out the disconnect that's taking place when people are discussing over-the-counter medication advertising versus a 7.1 magnitude earthquake that's taken place in Indonesia.
The blog, Crunchy Domestic Goddess, has a post that includes an e-mail from Kathy Widmer, Vice President of Marketing for McNeil Consumer Healthcare, responding to the feedback left on Motrin?s website the previous night.
I like the perspective put into words by blogger Beth Dunn in her post Motrin Moms React. Beth suggests to the ad is kind of frenetic, with an appeal to "moms who wear their kids" in slings, backpacks, and whatnot.
The blog, Green & Clean Mom, has a post titled Social Media and Marketing Lesson for the makers of Motrin: Don?t Mess with Moms! They're offering advice on what companies, PR firms, and marketing gurus should be listening to.
I think I like a post from Laura Fitton most, she writes about Motrin?s Twitter Moment. Her post includes a video that is a must view for anyone wanting to learn from the nasty side effects resulted in this fail of a marketing campaign.

Air quality experts are warning people to avoid outdoor activity today as unhealthy air is expected to linger throughout parts of Los Angeles County, and Orange County areas, due to California wildfires putting smoke and ash into the atmosphere.
The South Coast Air Quality Management District is advising everyone to avoid outdoor activities in smoke impacted areas. Outdoor sporting events, such as the inaugural Pasadena Marathon, have been canceled due to health risks related to air quality.
Unhealthy air is expected to linger throughout Sunday in many parts of Los Angeles and Orange County areas, which have been worst hit by wind fanned fires. The elderly, children, and people with breathing problems or heart disease are especially advised to avoid outdoor activities.
The South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD - website) is the air pollution control agency for all of Orange County and the urban portions of Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Air-Quality Maps are available on the website, providing hourly updates of air quality conditions in the Southern California area.
Air quality has been reported unhealthy in nearly all of Orange County, the San Fernando Valley, downtown Los Angeles, the South Bay (which includes Long Beach), the Corona area, Chino Hills, portions of the San Gabriel Mountains (near the Sylmar fire), and Northwest Los Angeles County coastal areas. Current Hourly Air Quality Data for the Southland area can be viewed here. Map data is provided by Microsoft Virtual Earth and air-quality information is updated hourly.
Here in Venice Beach California, there's a strong smell of smoke in the air, and a thin blanket of ash on everything outdoors. I've been keeping in touch with local LA and Orange County residents, via my twitter profile, and have received several reports of sore throats, headaches, sinus problems, breathing difficulties, and other smoke related complaints, among SoCal residents.
A number of people are also searching for fire maps in the Southern California area. Using Google maps, CAL FIRE maintains a California Fire Map that's currently displaying fire information for the Tea Fire, Sayre Fire, and Freeway Fire. According to associated map reports, the Tea Fire is burning north of Montecito in Santa Barbara County. The fire has burned 1,940 acres and is 60% contained. The Sayre Fire is burning near Sylmar in Los Angeles County. The fire is 8,000 acres and 20% contained. The Freeway Fire (Diamond Bar fire) is burning just outside of Corona (Chino Hills and Yorba Linda areas) at the border of Orange and Riverside County.
In case you missed them, here are the links once again for fire and air-quality maps in the Southern California area. The OC Register also maintains a frequently updated fire map on their web site.

Despite Southern California fires burning in Anaheim Hills, Yorba Linda, Sylmar, and surrounding areas, the city of Pasadena is expected to host its first marathon on Sunday morning, November 16, 2008. The race is expected to begin at 6:30 a.m. Event organizers are consulting with local air quality experts, as well as health and fire officials, to determine whether there should be last-minute adjustments, or even a cancellation of the Pasadena Marathon. Race related announcements will be made after 4 a.m. on Sunday morning (race day).
There are important factors to consider for those traveling to Pasadena, especially since Caltrans and local news agencies have reported freeway closures due to the Southern California fires. The Sylmar fire is the closest to Pasadena (about 25 miles away), and freeway closures reported earlier today include the 5 freeway at the Grapevine pass, and parts of the 91 freeway in Orange County. Anyone planning to travel to the Pasadena area early Sunday morning is strongly advised to check SoCal freeway conditions before heading out. The County of Los Angeles Fire Department maintains a California Wildfires Map (currently for the Sayre fire and Sylmar fire) on the website's home page. The Orange County Register (OCRegister) maintains an up to date fire map for the OC area. The map currently covers area fires including Corona, Yorba Linda, and Montecito.
The Pasadena Marathon homepage lists an urgent event update reminding everyone regarding event changes or potential cancellations due to poor air quality. According to the web site, individuals signed up for the marathon newsletter will receive notification regarding any changes with the event. Many people have trained long and hard for this California marathon, and organizers, as well as volunteers and sponsors, are concerned about everyone's health and safety.
Traffic will be affected locally by Sunday mornings scheduled race. Street closures include parts of Del Mar Boulevard, Colorado Blvd., Orange Grove Blvd., Washington Boulevard, Rosemont Avenue, Arroyo Blvd., and others along and surrounding the course. A street closure course map can be found in PDF format here. There is free participant parking being provided at the Pasadena City College.
The marathon portion of the event is expected to begin at 6:30 am in downtown Pasadena at Pasadena City College. The college is the location for both the start and finish of the race. There is a bike tour scheduled to begin at 6 a.m., and a 5K scheduled to begin at 6:50 a.m. There is also a half marathon also beginning at 6:30 a.m., same time as the full Pasadena Marathon. A color-coded marathon and bike tour map in PDF format is available here.
For those that participate in marathons, triathlons, 5K events, 10K events, and other action sports, the website active.com hosts a massive amount of information. Pasadena Marathon information is available on the active.com web site as well.
We at planetchiropractic.com would like to recognize Pasadena Chiropractor, Dr. Michael DeNapoli, for all the work his office has been doing in preparing local athletes for Sunday's scheduled event. His chiropractic office is located on Green Street, just a few blocks from Pasadena city College.
All the best of those planning to run, wall, or bike in this event. We'll do our best to update this information before it has received regarding race changes are cancellations.
